Smart Metering • In May 2009, the Government unveiled plans for smart meters to be installed in every home by the end of 2020. • The projected cost of fitting approximately 22 million gas and 26 million electricity meters, was estimated at £7 billion. • In the meantime, companies within the UK are providing very advanced, innovative smart metering services and corporate business users for the monitoring of electricity and gas usage/wastage. • Smart meters perform the traditional meter function of measuring energy consumption, but they also offer a range of advanced functions, such as; allowing energy suppliers to communicate directly with their customers, removing the need for meter readings and ensuring accurate bills with no estimates. • Consumption information can be provided on a ‘real time’ basis to domestic customers through an integrated, in-home display. • Smart meters will play an important role in the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy, and in helping to meet some of the long term challenges we face in ensuring affordable, secure and sustainable energy. • Consumers will have more control over their own energy use and carbon emissions, and new opportunities will be opened up for energy retail services, infrastructure management and renewable energy generation. • All smart meter systems comprise an electronic box and a communications link, which can relay information in ‘real time’ to both the consumer and the utility company (energy supplier). • The critical technology problem or challenge is that of the communications link which must enable each meter to reliably and securely communicate the information collected to some central location, using the internet, Wi-Fi, cell/pager networks or whatever. • Rural utilities have very different communication issues than urban utilities, and to date no one solution seems to be optimal for all applications. • In the meantime, in respect of that other scarce natural resource, water meters are being increasingly installed by water companies, not just in new houses, and research shows that a metered household is encouraged to save water and uses around 10% less water than an unmetered household. • Smart meters for water consumption measurement are also available, and can enable consumers to actively manage their water use. The construction industry turnover is 110b per year. A significant industry in its own right employing over 2 million people and accounting for 10% of GDP. The East Midlands has over 14, 000 SME in operation across the region and some of the largest contraction business in the United Kingdom based in the region. The industry faces many challenges and not least the way clients invest and procure the projects. The industry for the first time with Government and Clients both public and private are signing a land mark commitment to improve the standards of the construction industry. The Construction Commitments are a list of aspiration we are encouraging organisations to commit and deliver their construction project to. The commitments are a collection of leadership statements providing vision to clients and industry that are backed by the Construction Minister, industry and the local community. We would like to make you aware of the following: 1. The construction commitments we have enclosed a copy. 2. The East Midlands roadshow conference to promote the Construction Commitments 7th November 2006 at PERA Melton Mowbray. I would be grateful if you could complete the attached form so we can keep in contact with your organisation and make sure they are correctly involved ion the conference and all the subsequent activities we will be investing in after the conference to improve the regional construction industry to help them achieve and continually improve against the Commitments.

East Midlands EXPO
East Midlands EXPO is organised by a partnership of the East Midlands Centre for the Built Environment (emcbe) Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM), East Midlands Regional Assembly (EMRA) and East Midlands Development Agency (emda). Simon Drury Chair of the East Midlands EXPO Steering Group said “East Midlands EXPO has grown every year and007 will be no exception. This event is a superb opportunity for individuals and organisations alike to see and engage with champions of sustainable development from across the region.” It is anticipated that around 100 exhibitors will attend the exhibition, along with over 1,000 visitors from both the Public and Private Sectors from across the East Midlands and further afield. Rockingham Speedway will be showcasing its own reduction of Carbon emissions programme at the event. Stands will cost from £50 for charities. Early bird booking discount is available for bookings made before 31st July 2007. Covered and open exhibition space available. Information on bookings for exhibitors is available from expo07@emra.gov.uk. PDF of exhibitor flyer will be attached Comments on EXPO 2006 "The event was very well organised and we enjoyed the experience. It has given me another venue to pursue in respect of marketing our company". Lesley Jephcott, Client Services GB Ltd "EXPO is a clear demonstration of how agencies and key stakeholders in the region can work together, to deliver high impact conference partnership with industry on such an important subject. The conference has gathered momentum and firmly embedded sustainability in the working practice of regional business and organisations" Tim Embley, Construction Industry Council "I previously found that regional events on similar topics to have little value, this event changed that. I thought it was very good, well organised and attracted a good audience".
