People are being invited to put their views on the latest proposals for widening the A453 between the M1 Junction 24 and A52 at Clifton in Nottinghamshire. The Highways Agency is holding public exhibitions in Kegworth and Clifton to show how the A453 could be improved to reduce congestion and improve accessibility and safety along the 12 km stretch. Highways Agency Project Manager, Shifeek Hussain, said: "The exhibition is a follow-up to an exhibition of our earlier proposals held in 2004. We will show how the scheme has developed since then and we are inviting people to comment on the changes. "People will be able to see our proposals and discuss them with the project team. More than 14,000 leaflets are being distributed inviting local residents to the exhibitions and posters will be put up around Kegworth, Clifton and other communities along this section of the A453." The plans are for a two-lane dual carriageway generally along the line of the existing A453 between M1 Junction 24 and Barton in Fabis, moving off line to the south between Barton and Mill Hill. The rest of the section would be widened to four lanes through Clifton. There would be improved junctions, new link roads and new and improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. The exhibitions are taking place at: ......Friday 8 June 10am-8pm at Clifton Leisure Centre, Southchurch Drive, Clifton, NG11 8AB .....Saturday 9 June 10am-4pm at Clifton Leisure Centre, Southchurch Drive, Clifton, NG11 8AB. Through Clifton itself there were 56 recorded accidents resulting in 9 serious personal injuries including one fatality. 3. About 23,000 vehicles on average per day currently use the rural section of the A453. Through Clifton the flow increases to about 30,000 per day. 4. There have been improvement proposals for the A453 for a number of years, and over this time there have been extensive consultations, studies and inquiries. At this stage of the scheme development, the Highways Agency is holding a formal 6-week consultation period which will be preceded by the public exhibitions in Kegworth and Clifton. To supplement this, it will continue to liaise with those people directly affected by the proposals. 5. The final report for the A453 Multi-Modal Study was published in 2002. This widening scheme was one of its main recommendations. 6. Subject to completion of statutory procedures, construction work could start in summer 2009, with the road ready to open to traffic by winter 2011/12. 7.
