Repair and Maintenance

It goes without saying that a building will last longer if it is well maintained and retains a purpose.

Simple measures should be taken to ensure that the structure is cleaned and maintained on a regular basis, from clearing leaves and debris from gutters and other rainwater goods, securing loose fixtures and fittings, ensuring there is enough ventilation, and ground levels are kept below damp-proof courses. Damaged windows and other building elements need to be repaired in a timely fashion to prevent further decay.  Running water and interstitial moisture are the main causes of problems in buildings.

SPAB run a National Repair & Maintenance Week every November to try to help the public understand the importance of good building maintenance.

Dr Jonathan Foyle is the 2011 'face' of National Repair & Maintenance Week.
