Shape East are delighted to announce this free afternoon Masterclass workshop, which will provide professional and engaging advice on the assessment of significance within your historic environment, with particular focus on the role of sustainable practices in historic conservation. The half day session will involve a selection of presentations from expert speakers, plus case study and final question and answer feedback session.

 

Topics to be discussed:

  • The use of conservation statements and impact assessments in assessing the historic significance of buildings
  • The relationship between the historic environment and sustainability
  • Practical and social considerations in the retrofitting of historic buildings

Professor Chris Baines

Professor Chris Baines taught landscape architecture until 1986 and has particular expertise in the fields of urban ecology and sustainable development.  He works as an independent adviser to central and local government and to the house building, water, finance and aggregates industries.

He is an award winning writer and broadcaster and he plays a leading role in the voluntary sector as Vice President of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts and President of the Association for Environment-Conscious Building, the Thames Estuary Partnership and the Essex Wildlife Trust.  In 2004 he was awarded the RSPB’s medal of honour.

Peter Rawlings

Peter has recently become an Associate Director at Caroe Architecture Ltd, based in Cambridge. For the last ten years, he worked for van Heyningen and Haward Architects in London on a wide range of high profile heritage, arts and education projects. He also has experience of the healthcare and retail sectors. Peter trained as an architect at the University of Cambridge where he went on to take a MPhil in History and Philosophy of Architecture. Many of his projects have involved a combination of new build work with creative adaptation of historic buildings and he is a RIBA accredited conservation architect.

 

Dr Andrew Turton

Dr Andrew Turton is a specialist in energy and sustainability in the built environment. Andrew works with both the private and public sector, advising developers on creating strategies for major new sites, and advising local and national government on the design and development of new policy around energy and sustainability. This dual role provides a unique position from which a balance can be made between real life viability and the policy requirements. Andrew works within the Sustainable Development Group at AECOM.
