BUILT ENVIRONMENT EVENT AIMS TO BRIDGE THE GAP TO BETWEEN LOCAL BUSINESSES AND HIGHER EDUCATION PROVIDERS
East Midlands Built Environment companies are being urged to attend an event at University of Derby to highlight the benefits of partnerships between Built Environment and Higher Education providers.
The event, which is sponsored by Hot Prospects, is supported by five1 Sector Skills Councils including ConstructionSkills and SummitSkills and other key organisations such as the East Midlands Centre for Constructing the Built Environment (EMBCE), EU Skills and Leap Ahead Lifelong Learning Network.
Commenting ahead of the event, Amanda Sergeant, Regional Strategy Advisor for ConstructionSkills2 in the East Midlands, said: “Applying new technologies as well as learning new skills and techniques are just some of the ways in which businesses can make a genuine difference to their bottom line. There will be a wealth of information and advice available at the event so any small and medium sized businesses operating in this sector should take full advantage of the support on offer.”
The event draws upon real life case studies of businesses and Higher Education providers already benefiting from successful partnerships through collaborative working. Experienced business leaders and education professionals from across the region will discuss the practicalities of making collaborations work.
Kat Wehrheim from Summit Skills added: “This event is the first of its kind in the region and further events are planned for the New Year at different locations to build on these partnerships and encourage employers to consider the growth potential that graduates could bring to their business.”
Richard Beamish, chief executive of AssetSkills commented: “This event offers an opportunity to explore genuine and practical partnerships aimed at widening employer/HE partnerships across the built environment in the East Midlands that will benefit employers, employees and customers alike.”
Lantra’s East Midlands Regional Partnership Manager, Mike Appleyard, said: “The workforce of the future depends on businesses investing in skills and encouraging new entrants into the workplace. Lantra is therefore pleased to support this event as it will highlight to businesses what higher education establishments are doing to develop a skilled and ready to use workforce as well as support their current employees. Building strong relationships creates a win win situation for businesses, students, colleges and industry as for example work placements can be offered, job vacancies filled with qualified staff and more.”
Aled Williams, Deputy Director of the Centre of Education in the Built Environment, summarised: “Our ultimate aim is to start conversations that can contribute success to the Built Environment industry between local companies and higher education providers.”
The East Midlands New Technology Initiative (NTI) will be showcasing projects which help small and medium sized firms. East Midlands NTI is an initiative backed by the region’s leading colleges and universities. It provides matched funded grants for businesses to invest in state of the art technology, and gain advanced technology skills through NTI approved courses. It recently launched a unique scheme to make six local colleges specialists in energy efficient technology with information that will be accessible to businesses.
It is hoped the event will encourage employers to think about utilising services from within the higher education sector and will also provide information on how employees can gain access to higher level qualifications. As recently there have been new and exciting developments of business focused bite size chunks of accredited learning, Foundation Degrees and Level 4 NVQ.
