Conference builds the case for a career in Construction
ConstructionSkills recently hosted the ‘Changing the Face of Construction’ conference at Loughborough University, with the aim of providing girls with practical advice and information from industry experts on pursuing a career in the construction industry.
50 sixth form students from across the East Midlands attended the conference on 7th November. Delegates met companies, universities and successful women in construction, as well as exploring the day to day working environment of a number of key roles within the industry, including civil engineering, town and country planning and quantity surveying.
Representatives from professional bodies and universities such as the Royal Institution for Civil Engineers, the University of Nottingham and Pick Everard were on hand to provide students with expert advice. Groups were also taken to Willmott Dixon construction sites at Shepshed High School and Loughborough Magistrates Courts to gain a behind the scenes look at activity on a development site.
Kay Leech, Education Manager for ConstructionSkills Midlands, commented: “There has never been a more exciting time to join the construction industry. We are working closely with establishments and professional bodies like those who attended the conference to help highlight the diverse range of careers available in the industry and to encourage more young people, especially girls into construction.”
Equal Opportunities Commission research shows that one in eight young women are keen to work in the construction industry. However, the stark reality is only ten per cent of those working in construction occupations, such as design and management are actually female and only one per cent are working in the crafts.
The latest ConstructionSkills Network Report (published in June 2006) revealed that on average, 7,000 people are needed in the Midlands to join the construction industry every year for the next ten years just to meet current demand.
A pupil from Minster School, Southwell, added: “I had no idea how many job opportunities there are within the construction industry; the conference was a real eye-opener. Now I know so many jobs exist, I have become very motivated to explore a career in construction.”
