2012 Construction Commitments Roadshow highlights opportunities for businesses in the East Midlands

Over 200 construction leaders will join industry experts to hear how to improve performance over the next five years 

East Midlands, Leicestershire, Melton Mowbray, 7th November 2007: Constructing Excellence and its regional partner, the East Midlands Centre for constructing the Built Environment (EMCBE), will be hosting a major regional roadshow on 7 November in Melton Mowbray. The event, entitled ‘2012 Construction Commitments: A winning business strategy’ – will focus on how the industry can achieve new levels of performance and benefit from the opportunities presented by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. 

The roadshow features high-profile speakers from organisations including the Olympic Delivery Authority; the East Midlands Regional Development Agency; the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform; The Office of Government Commerce; The Health and Safety Executive; ConstructionSkills, and business and client leaders from the East Midlands. 

At the roadshow, delegates will discuss the impact of the 2012 Construction Commitments and how to adopt key areas from the Commitments to improve the delivery of construction projects. The structure for the conference also integrates the Common Minimum Standards and the CDM Regulations. Over 400 industry leaders have attended other regional equivalents of this roadshow to date. The roadshows are aimed at clients, consultants, designers, leading contractors manufacturers and suppliers.  

The 2012 Construction Commitments, which can be adopted by all organisations committed to best practice, cover issues that are key to improvement, such as procurement, sustainability, health and safety, design quality and client leadership. The commitments are designed for companies working in all areas of construction. They are intended ensure that the London 2012 Games act as a catalyst for a legacy of performance improvement across the built environment sector.

David Walker, Chairman of East Midlands Centre for constructing the Built Environment said: “The East Midlands has a thriving economy. The role of the construction sector is vital to balancing economic growth and sustainable development. This roadshow will be a valuable opportunity to help many local, as well as national, organisations understand the impact of the 2012 Commitments. At the same time we want to highlight the opportunities to renew and improve the construction sector.”

Don Ward, Chief Executive, Constructing Excellence, said: “So far we’ve seen a huge amount of interest in our regional roadshows. This really demonstrates the important role that Constructing Excellence plays in bringing together industry leaders from across the entire spectrum of the construction and built environment sector. This year represents an important year for the sector with many changes in regulations and standards. It is important that we continue to help and support the industry through this change to deliver better and improved performance.”

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) will be speaking at the East Midlands roadshow to promote the range of opportunities the 2012 Olympics hold for East Midlands companies. The ODA are committed to working with the best in business to deliver the venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Games. Local businesses have the opportunity to be involved both directly with the ODA and through the supply chains of contractors. The Games will showcase world-class business performance alongside sporting excellence.

Speakers at the conference will include: Jeff Moore, Chief Executive, East Midlands Development Agency; Trevor Hursthouse, Chairman, Goodmarriott & Hursthouse Ltd; Mathew Lugg, Head of Highways, Leicestershire County Council, Olympic Delivery Authority, Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, ConstructionSkills, OGC, HSE, N G Bailey.

Throughout the day delegates will be able to sign the 2012 Construction Commitments. The initial document was signed by: The Rt Hon Tessa Jowell, MP; David Higgins, Chief Executive ODA; The Rt Hon Margaret Hodge, MP; Peter Rogers, Chairman 2012 Task Group, and Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London. 

This conference is part of a series of regional conferences being held across the UK for all stakeholders of the Built Environment.
