Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs)
-
The development of a SWMP can offer construction companies an effective tool for taking action on resource efficiency and cutting unnecessary waste.
-
The DTi’s Voluntary Code of Practice for SWMPs will change to a legal requirement in 2008.
-
All construction projects over £250,000 in value will then legally require a SWMP.
-
In the meantime, local authorities are increasingly requiring evidence of a commitment to waste management when considering planning applications, and when procuring their own projects.
-
All SWMPs will need to identify, as a bare minimum, the following:-
- An individual responsible for resource management
- The types of waste that will be generated
- Resource management options for these wastes
- The use of appropriate and licensed waste management contractors
- A plan for monitoring and reporting on resource use and quantity of waste
