 Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs)

  •  The development of a SWMP can offer construction companies an effective tool for taking action on resource efficiency and cutting unnecessary waste.

  • The DTi’s Voluntary Code of Practice for SWMPs will change to a legal requirement in 2008.

  • All construction projects over £250,000 in value will then legally require a SWMP.

  • In the meantime, local authorities are increasingly requiring evidence of a commitment to waste management when considering planning applications, and when procuring their own projects.

  • All SWMPs will need to identify, as a bare minimum, the following:-

    •       An individual responsible for resource management
    •       The types of waste that will be generated
    •       Resource management options for these wastes
    •       The use of appropriate and licensed waste management contractors
    •       A plan for monitoring and reporting on resource use and quantity of waste
