National organisation Constructing Excellence Launches club in Derby
In excess of 100 local businesses from the construction industry gathered at the launch of the Derby Constructing Excellence Club on Tuesday, 25th September, sponsored by HSBC. Constructing Excellence is the only UK industry-wide body operating in the built environment and with so much physical regeneration happening in and around Derby’s city centre, this club will offer large and small organisations the opportunity to find out more about real issues such as ‘Best Practice’ and ‘Sustainability’ at events throughout the year. The launch, which was free of charge, featured guest speakers who were able to offer their advice on how the Derby Constructing Excellence club can help businesses grow with details about some of the developments already happening in the region. John Burns, Constructing Excellence Club Chair, opened the event and gave a national overview, David Walker, Chairman of EMCBE and Group Construction Director of Bowmer & Kirkland explained how the Derby CE club will be supported within the regional context. John Cadwallader, Chief Executive Derby Cityscape highlight the current developments and plans for the future of Derby city including the plans for the historic Cathedral Quarter which was further expanded on in the presentation made by Blueprint Director, Peter Connolly. Anthony Walshe, Gardiner & Theobald LLP is chairman for the Derby Club expressed his excitement about plans for future events saying: “This is a unique club for organisations working within the built environment and provides the ideal opportunity for like minded business professionals to learn more about our fast changing industry, from new legislations to how to apply a business model for growth. “Businesses in the construction industry, whether they are small or large, face the same challenges and the success of these clubs nationwide are an example of how working together we can be a shining example of best practice. “The club will also keep members informed of the developments in and around our city and share in the benefits of continuous improvement.” As Derby looks to attract £2 billion investment into the city centre alone through the Derby Cityscape Masterplan, we are seeing some of the biggest changes since the industrial revolution and it is important that we work together to leave an impressive and high quality legacy behind. EMCE/EMIP Annual Conference - Making Assets Work East Midlands Centre of Excellence (EMCE) and East Midlands Improvement Partnership (EMIP) Annual conference. This action packed day included several key note speakers from national government who discussed the latest developments in the improvement and efficiency agenda and possible repercussions from the recently published White Paper. Design4Life@EXPO Part of EXPO 2006 at Pride Park stadium Design4Life looks at Low Carbon design and sustainable design. Hosted by Paul Rowley of Loughborough University the workshop introduced energy efficiency within construction design. Event downloads:

Collaboration in Construction Construction workshop hosted by East Midlands Centre of Excellence (EMCE) to raise the awareness and benefits of construction frameworks. Attended by over 120 delegates from local authorities, clients and industry representatives, the day focussed on how to stimulate a change in the construction market and encourage the adoption of best practice in local authorities.
